A chawan tea bowl by Zen priest Kajitani Sonin of Sokokuji Temple in Kyoto enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. The box is stamped with the Yaki-in (brand) of Sokokuji Temple. Kajitani Sonin (1914-1995) was born in Oita on the southern Island of Kyushu. Diagnosed as ill in Junior High, he was sent to Ganseiji Temple where he entered the priest hood. He served as head of a number of important temples including Sokokuji and Kinkakuji in Kyoto, as well as a professorship at Hanazono University.
