A lone bird scans the water for a meal between the late summer leaves decomposing into the lotus pond. The scene is performed with pigment on paper, with highlights of gold appliqué under the pigments on the leaf edges. The screen is 163 x 148 cm (64-1/4 x 58-1/4 inches) and is in excellent condition. It has been completely remounted separated from the black frame by an elegant strip of gold and backed with sturdy blue cloth. A spectacular scene dating from the war era, sometime between 1935 and 1950, it is signed in the lower left corner, but like many things from this tumultuous period in Japanese history, we have found nothing about the artist.
