A pair of beautifully lacquered haisen bowls on trays dating from the opening years of the 20th century enclosed in a custom compartmentalized storage box titled Maki-e Dai-tsuki Haisen and bearing a collection inventory paper from the Muragishi family on front. Haisen were used to wash the sake cup between drinks when a single cup is shared among people. Outside both are austere polished black on matching trays with slight variation in rim design. Within the first bowl is decorated with stylized floral and geometric motifs among soaring cranes. The other is gilded gold inside, with bright red goldfish among water plants. Overall the set is in excellent condition, with minor wear to the trays where the bowls have sat typical of age and use.
