Antique Japanese Gilded Lacquer Tokkuri Vase
Please refer to our stock # MOR7862 when inquiring.
Raised vines creep around the oval form of this very unusual wooden bottle enclosed in an antique wooden box titled Kanyu Tokkuri (Crackled Sake Jar). The wooden flask has been lacquered black in such a way as to cause the lacquer to slightly wrinkle, then gilded, and polished down so that only the gold in the wrinkles remains like crackled glaze on pottery. The base and neck are polished black lacquer. It is 17 cm (6-1/2 inches) tall and in overall excellent condition dating from the 19th century.
