Charcoal on paper is transformed into rippling water reflecting huge ceramic jars in this work signed by Vietnamese artist "My." The jars, though they dwarf both boat and man, serve somehow to draw the viewer into these smaller elements, creating an intimate portrait of the white-beaded grandfather poling his vessel up the river. This Danang artist specializes in capturing with charcoal such moments in the lives of her country's elder citizens. (See a similar work by this artist in our archive listing # 30-70.) This sketch is dated 1997 and is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 13" (33 cm), width 17" (43 cm).
