A Chinese painting depicting a teacup and a teapot under a plum tree. Painted with light ink on paper. The painter Hu Teimei (1848-1899), he was born in Anhui prefecture as a son of a painter Yin Hu. He is specialized in literature painting such as bird and flower, landscape painting. This painting is painted at Okayama castle in 1884, Okayama castle used to be called bird castle due to the colour of the outside wall (black). These 4 Chinese character means “A precious spring worth more than selling own precious item”, he was probably in a castle and having a cup of tea under a plum tree in February or March and was calmly looking forward to seeing coming Spring season.

胡璋(胡鐵梅)
胡璋[清]画家胡寅之子,号尧城子,字铁梅(一八四八至一八九九),安徽桐城人,一说建德(今东至县)人。寅子。工山水及人物、花卉,与王冶梅并以画梅得 名,铁梅能腴,冶梅能瘦,并为巢林遗派。有梅花高士图。久寓沪上,旋游日本,画名甚噪。卒年五十二。卒后葬于神户。《寨松阁谈艺琐录》、《海上墨林》、 《近代六十名家画传》。
