Very nice vase made in a tusk with a gold lacquer decoration of a shishi (mythical lion) holding in its paws the wheel of the law or wheel of Dharma. The lacquered decoration of peonies, bamboos and prunus as well as the animal of cranes, birds, hinds and butterflies in a lacustrine landscape surrounds the whole vase in a very elegant and refined way. The vase, without bottom, is glued on a wooden base with floral decoration. Total Height : 27,5cm (10.7/8")

This rare sculpture of two warriors in fierce battle against 22 onis spirits or monsters placed in different positions on an old vine shoot which supports and is supposed to represent a forest. The onis in Japanese legends are often represented in grotesque situations as shown in this sculpture. Height : 26". Stamped. Some very few cracks and minor restorations.
