On a black lacquer ground (ro-iro) the hiramaki-e gold lacquer decoration takes up a scene from the "Tale of Genji" or "Genji Monogotari" novel written in the 11th century by Dame Murasaki Shikibu where we see the Genji on a terrace in discussion with a woman while his servants wait for him near a carriage under pines.
The inside of the lid, witha mura nashiji ground, is adorned with a silvery autumn moon among the grasses.
Supplied with its original wooden box.
