The 99 Depose for the French market bebe by Handwerck (well, Simon and Halbig for Handwerck) is my very favorite mold that they produced. Her French face is just so charmant! Whenever I see a 99 doll I always say ‘I want that doll!’ (especially when it’s in this 23” size).
The bisque head on this bebe is beautiful with lovely rendered features, sweet lips nicely painted and partly open to reveal her little white teeth, nice blush across the cheeks that isn’t overly rosy but just right and beautiful glass blue eye with eyelashes still on the original rockers. The bisque head is without hairlines, cracks, breaks or repairs, just some minimal wear around the rim and a tiny flake of paint off high on her forehead covered by her wig.
Her clothing consists of a beautiful maroon stripped shiny dress with wide knitted collar and knit trim about the waist with two more rows near the bottom. The dress has an attached silky pink half-slip with lace under it. She wears a simple antique cotton slip with antique drawstring pantaloons trimmed in lace underneath it. Over her full blond curly wig with cardboard pate she wears a straw hat that is a nice complement to the dress. Newer long white socks and black shoes complete her look. She has had a bath (along with all of her clothing and wig) and she has passed all tests successfully so she is ready for play or display.
She is on a fully articulating wooden body that is nicely painted in flesh tones with all fingers and toes present; however, it is not stamped and I’m not convinced it is original for her but it is correct for her size. Her stringing is ok so she can hold most poses fine, the legs could be slightly tighter but she stands fine especially with a doll stand. Because the body is likely a replacement, I have priced her accordingly. She really is a beautiful bebe, a pleasure to admire in her adorable little girl costume. She displays well on her own or with other antique dolls of her genre.
