Very early Simon and Halbig 939 mold for the French market, this bebe having the so-called 'Belton' (rather French fashion) type head set on a swivel shoulder plate on the original kid leather body with lower bisque arms. She is one of the earliest 939’s that I’ve ever seen with set spiral blue glass eyes with lots of painted lashes, closed mouth, feathered eyebrows (not molded like the later period S&H dolls) beautifully painted on her soft whitish bisque.
She has that definite French bebe look and is marked on the back of her head S 12 H, 939. Her head is in excellent condition without any hairlines, cracks, breaks or repairs, just a few ‘freckles’ across her nose that I’ve found to be pretty typical on early bisque dolls (it is due to them not being in the kiln long enough which doll makers didn’t discover until later. I had a Bru and a Halopeau that had the same thing). Her kid body is good for the age with a few patches and discoloration to the kid but she has been hand washed. The thumb and ring finger on her right hand is off (I bought her this way). She is on a swivel shoulder plate with a tiniest nick off the very back on the top of the shoulder plate. The head moves but I don't move it often since they did not add kid between the bisque parts.
She is wearing an old dress made of antique fabrics that fit’s her body perfectly. It does have a few tiny repairs and some holes on the back of the fabric and it was still very expensive when I bought it from another dealer, but I kept it because she looked so good in it. Accompanying the dress is the hat I bought with it, antique with a flourish of antique ivory and blue silk ribbons that match the dress. Underneath she is wearing antique slip, half-slip and pantaloons, antique shoes and socks. The leather shoes have been cleaned but not polished and are maybe a tad big but with the early squatty body I find it helps keep her standing up nicely. She also has old crystal earrings (that will be removed for shipping but included as well as her antique millinery violets) . She has an old mohair brown wig that is kept on nicely by the hat.
She measures about 20 1/2" to 21" in height on her original body. I bathed her years ago and I’ve given her another wipe down since so she is clean, along with all of her clothing that has been hand washed including her wig, so she is ready for play or display. I think she's the most beautiful early period 939 ever and it has been a real joy having her in my collection. Probably my favorite mold by S&H and this example is particularly beautiful and rarely found with her closed mouth and round head.
