In the early 1980s Haku Maki produced this unusual print, Poem 3. It has a kanji bottom margin (Mountain and Water) and is only slightly embossed. It is as if he started to do a lithograph and then decided to emboss it a bit. It is a modest-size print and not spectacular. By the time he did this print Maki had finished with embossed kanji and ceramics and was heading toward less compelling work.Poem 3 has a gold sun right center, but the print has no drama and no oomph. 15x15cm.

1971 was a big year for Haku Maki He did over 100 different images of Japanese prints. Some, like this one, were big prints--this one, Poem 71-91, is 30.5 Inches x 15.25. It is 68/108. This is the abstract kanji for Mu or Nothing and he titled it Nothing The kanji starts at the top then cascades down to the final four strokes at the bottom. From a distance it appears to me like the steps going from top to bottom of a building on a Chinese hill on the Yangzi. Rare and dramatic, fully restored. The back has tape remnants which are stable and cannot be removed.

In the 1960s, Haku Maki was beginning his career as a modern print maker. He used ersatz titles for different series of prints: Cell, Animal Song for the Zodiac, Proportion, Work, Figure, and Emanation. Flower Song was another. Here we show Flower Song 6, which I have just acquired, and Flower Song 3 which I have owned for a long time The others are not noteworthy. This one measures 13 x 17in/48 x 34cm.

In 1981 Haku Maki suddenly produced a modest series of prints with a vinyl (old leather)-like background. I have already written about several of these in my Research Note 8. Now I present another: a striking orange red persimmon with leaves tipped with a special Japanese lacquer and the background in vinyl. This is 81-31 and it is 175/190.

[Note: Daniel Tretiak wrote this in 2012.] This work is now 5 years old. I set forth the main aspects of the works of Haku Maki, the main themes of his work, the main aspects of his style, and the broad range of his works. I think I did not realize in 2007 the range and versatility of his work, its drama and subtlety. Since this book was published I have written 9 research notes and many descriptions of key works. Haku Maki did quite a number of prints using persimmon as a main theme Probably well over 100 He also began doing prints with ceramics around 1980 He probably did more than 100 ceramics theme prints. But the two there only came together in the persimmon and blue vase print shown here (and in an equally rare one with a persimmon and a strikingly beautiful yellow vase also shown here). This persimmon and vase print was done in 1975 and is quite rare: It is work 75-2 94/202 The two persimmon print is simply titled Persimmon. It is 62/150. Speaking as one outside the culture, the persimmon could represent transience. Once picked, they have a brief period of perfection before decay. Maki's images often evoke this feeling: the autumn leaf, the bare branch, the single flower or fruit. What do you think?
