This Yixing mythical animal is in superb condition. I purchased it in Hong Kong in the mid-1980s and have kept it in a good environment since. It is signed by one Zhong Mei. As shown, the head can be removed from the body. K.S. Lo of Hong Kong put Yixing back on the map in the 1980s; he wrote books about Yixing ware; other writers in China have written about it in Chinese. In mid-May someone asked me where I purchased it. I opened it and the original receipt from Hong Kong is inside. That d...

This is a very good Yixing "sanxianghu": Yixing claypot inside, wrapped with pewter on the outside, finished off with old jade (qing yu) original pieces at the handle, lid and spout. Calligraphy on one side, flowers on the other. This one has no mark in the base. The calligraphy is by one Su Chuan, a scholar of the 19th century. Very nice pot. Very good patina but a little dirty in places. We have not cleaned the pewter: that is for the next home!

Originally, I thought this was an Yixing teapot. I now think not. Rather it is a Japanese ceramic teapot modeled on a tetsubin, a cast iron Japanese teapot. The last image shows the seal of a maker or a kiln, we do not know. Tetsubin are not rare, ceramic pots modeled on them are. Late 19th Century. (Some teapots used in Hanto prints of Haku Maki look quite like this one..)

Tiliang Yixing Teapots are relatively rare. Many break in the transportation. This is a miniature one, new. circa 1995. It is very well made, has the maker's mark in the bottom. This is a Mid-Qing table screen. The wood throughout is zitan; there are no condition problems. No breaks,no nicks. The stone is called lu dou stone, from China's Yunnan Province (in the Southwest). The stone has a naturalistically formed animal in the center: it can be called a jilin (a mythical animal in China), a ...

This is a dynamically created mythical animal. He is writhing in front of us, his tongue is moving noisily. The maker's mark in the bottom is that of Chen Mingyuan who lived in the early Qing dynasty, flourishing in the Kangxi period (1661-1722). This piece is in the style of Chen but not his. A distinguished colleague wrote: "The dog is very cute but almost certainly not by Mingyuan. His marks was widely used and abused during the Republican period to date and can be found on items of ver...

This is a water dropper, used by the scholar to dribble water on to an ink stone; it is shaped like a pumpkin and the calligraphy on the side refers to its pumpkin shape. The entire effect is very realistic The pumpkin stem looks correct and also covers the water in the vessel. But it also looks like a garlic clove.
