Daniel Tretiak has written a book, The Life and Works of Haku Maki, the important Japanese printmaker of the second half of the 20th Century. Maki toiled alone most of the time between 1960 and 2000. His output was substantial, most of it was cool, crisp, elegant. An example is shown above. I wrote about it: "The print in the center is the kanji for Mr or or I; it swooshes across the print, as if written with a big brush." It is Poem 71-51, done in 1971. It had an edition of 151. I own the pri...

This is Jiao xiang, a sedan chair box. Used by scholar-officials to carry their documents and writing implements from post to post. This is NOT of a great wood, but today it is still a rare piece of furniture/scholar's art in Beijing. Probably made of elm. This is complete, good condition. Serviceable and very good lines. This box had been a bit rickety for a long time, I have simply had it put back in order: no wood needed to be replaced, so none was. I cannot source the missing brass piece...

Here are two large lotus leaf toggles each with frogs and lotus leafs as key parts of the work. In the first 4 frames we see a fat frog nibbling on the vine of the lotus which has come through the leaf from the bottom where the vine itself begins and comes through the leaf. The frog is very large, fat. In the second toggle, the whole lotus "action" is on the underside: a large lotus pod with the seeds is seen, all seeds are in excellent condition and all move. The frog is a bit on the skimpy s...

Category says this is Japanese, it is Chinese and I cannot change. drum is rosewood, probably not zitan; frog is stone -- serpentine? These are two very well done toggles. The ball inside the drum moves, the lotus seeds on the top and bottom move. They make the sound of a drum being hit during a Chinese opera or somesuch. Well carved, excellent condition. The stone frog is also very nice, a sleek frog, not a jumping one.

This is very attractive North China Deer. It was carved by an unknown carver in Hebei (Beijing is surrounded by Hebei) and brought to market here. This statue is rarely seen in Chinese wooden art.

Amber is very old, as we show below. The pieces in this pendant were purchased in Beijing. A 14 K gold frame and clamp were made to order in Beijing. 78-2 (Water) In 1978 Haku Maki was nearing the end of his artistic effort using kanji (Chinese characters) as the main theme of his work. This print is one bold kanji, for Water. To make it easier for his gaijin admirers to know what it meant, he wrote "water' in the bottom margin. The effect if the print is bold, the character stretches across the paper; it has a gold Sun (akin to a splash for accent and decoration, near the center of the print), and the characteristic Maki seal in the lower r...

The 3 legged Chan is a mythical Chinese animal. It is normally seen with another mythical figure, Liu Han. The face of the Chan is at first glace quite ugly. But if one g...
