This cute backscratcher was probably made in the 1920s in the Greater Shanghai area. The hand is well carved, in excellent condition. The "stick" to which it is fixed also is good. This is a very nice item to gift someone seeking the unusual in 1920s Chinese Art (Art Deco of The East..)

This elegant brown porcelain water jarlet was used to hold water (a shui-er), to be gently poured out by the scholar in his studio. The lines are elegant, the glaze is rich and plentiful. A 19th Century piece. It may have been the inspiration for the wood piece which will be shown soon with this ceramic one for contrast. H is 5.5 cm, w is 6. HM LM

This Yixing mythical animal is in superb condition. I purchased it in Hong Kong in the mid-1980s and have kept it in a good environment since. It is signed by one Zhong Mei. As shown, the head can be removed from the body. K.S. Lo of Hong Kong put Yixing back on the map in the 1980s; he wrote books about Yixing ware; other writers in China have written about it in Chinese. In mid-May someone asked me where I purchased it. I opened it and the original receipt from Hong Kong is inside. That d...

A very rare and unusual snuff bottle made from still unknown substance, with its own custom made modern wooden stand. Dates from the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1850-1900. This is a large North China flat bean, dried and hollowed out. With seeds inside which crackle when shaken. I have never seen any other snuff bottle made of this leather-like substance. The bottle is very well hollowed out and has a a coral colored stopper. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks – fine old patina.

This elegant tobacco container is beautifully carved and has been well-cared for. Many many years ago: it was repaired in a poor way -- I have not tried to re-do this repair. This container is made of huangyangmu (boxwood). It measures 7 cm high, width is 6 cm and diameter is about 2 cm. Fine patina, sharp carving on both sides and on the top and bottom. Comes with fitted box (not shown). Surely, an elegant toggle accompanied this tobacco case.

This is a miniature altar table, modeled on a larger one. This one may have been used to display inkstones, we may use it to display toggles. It is graceful and elegant, with a fine patina. It has a few marks left by cups or small brushpots over the years. and one possibly hairline crack visible on the bop. These minor defects cannot be removed by us in Beijing: that would kill the patina.

This is a Great Toggle. It is a large lotus pod with Fifteen moving seeds hanging out from it. Great patina, very rare piece. Only the discerning should look Some would say Ming, I will just say first half of the mid-19th Century. The pod is 4 cm at the diameter, it is about 3 cm high, excluding the measurements of the sturdy branch from which it hangs.

This is a very good Yixing "sanxianghu": Yixing claypot inside, wrapped with pewter on the outside, finished off with old jade (qing yu) original pieces at the handle, lid and spout. Calligraphy on one side, flowers on the other. This one has no mark in the base. The calligraphy is by one Su Chuan, a scholar of the 19th century. Very nice pot. Very good patina but a little dirty in places. We have not cleaned the pewter: that is for the next home!

This is a large, substantial mid-Qing zitan brushpot. We reckon it was purchased in China around the end of the 19th Century and spent about 100 years in the US. It is strong, well-patinated, beautiful "niu-mao" (ox hairs, NOT "New-Mao"!!) running through the piece. Lovely patina, not re-touched or re-finished. I can find none this size in Beijing these days. Excellent condition. no nicks, chips. Plug is original. Only for the sophisticated buyer of Chinese antique wooden scholar's items. H is...

This elegant huanghuali brushpot was carved in the late Ming-early Qing period. There is a Tang dynasty poem carved into it, the figures in the low relief are two famous monks Han Shan and Shi De. They are shown discussing a famous Tang poem, written by Zhang Ji. We leave it for its next keeper to translate. The grain is a fine huanghuali one, there are gui-lia-er (ghost eyes) in the grain. The plug is original. (The pot does not tell us the year of carving nor the name of the carver -- so he ...

This is an ivory toggle showing two huans, a mythical Chinese animal. (It could also depict two lions..) The two "huan" are chasing each other. The carving is truly great: every line that should be there is there. This is an old toggle and as such is not in perfect condition. It seems to have a small nick in one paw, I believe. Price reflects this lacunae.

This is an elegant burl flask probably made and used in the Mongolia-Tibetan frontier lands of China. It is made of burl. When found in Beijing, I had Master Cao make a stand for it -- and it sits on that stand. It probably was used to carry tobacco. The plastic cap does not move: we cannot separate it from the flask. The center "button" moves and can be lifted out to put tobacco inside. The flask has a diameter of 13 cm, and the wood is 5 cm at its thickest point Lovely patina and a few nic...

This is an authentic full maizhen, made of chicken wing wood (Jichimu): we have never seen one in many years of collecting. It is a complete object: the place where he arm rests to take the pulse is connected to the base with strong wire. It folds together perfectly for the Chinese medical doctor to carry with him The patina on the maizhen itself is great, evidence of much use and many presumably cured patients.

This is a fine Frog Toggle; he is about 3.5 cm long, 2 cm tall and 2 cm wide. He is made of burl, the eyes are zitan and are circled by a strip of bronze. He sits on his haunches, waiting to jump. He has been doing that for 150 years. Well-patinated.
