A friend from afar wrote: “I want to buy only toggles not small sculptures, nor a pendant nor an amulet. Here I show a small sculpture at the left, then a very typical and elegant toggle (the leaf is carved “to die for”) and a fine pendant. It is reticulated. The material: I am not certain. Coconut shell? Dust of Chenziang wood that has been pressed together? Beautiful carving. pendant measures 4+ cm x 3 cm x 1 cm thickness shown

This zitan sugar cane squeezer. It is of course a mock one but was used by a scholar to remind him of his roots in the agricultural sector. It was probably made in the South of China, where sugar cane is grown, and used there. It is elegant and yet practical looking. Excellent Condition. 19th Century

This is an “abstract” toggle. It is carved from a naturalistically formed boxwood “root’ In frame No.1 we see a large and small lotus pods with moving seeds in the larger pod. Also a bud and other objects still not identified. In Frame 2 the backsides of the two pods may be seen as well as a frog and a fish. This toggle is well-worn but still mainly quite distinct and clear at least 100 years old, but could be older.
