This very nice modest sized brushpot is very nicely fluted. The carver creatively carved the surname of the owner-to-be, Jiang, in the side of the pot. It is almost like a shadow, almost better seen in a photograph than in the hand. This pot has a few normal nicks and scratches, indicative of regular use since it was made about 100 years ago. There are now other soapstone scholar's objects on this site: a very nice brushwasher, great Mountain with two monkeys, a seal and now this.

This is a very attractive pair of zitan wine cups. The design is simple and elegant: a handle (called an ear)is on each cup to facilitate drinking (we have seen them with no ear). These handles are each carved to resemble bamboo stalks. 19th century cups. very good patina. No defects to note.

This is an awesome soapstone Stone Mountain with two monkeys. This is a stunning desk ornament. It is one piece of soapstone: the stand is dark stained soapstone. The Mountain has faded into a greyish stone, rich with glistening patina. The two monkeys are carved rather roughly, but still look fine. Their eyes are filled with pearl dust, giving them a lustrous look. This is an early 19th Century piece...

This is a crusty brushpot, it has not been refinished, all its tree nodules are there. It needs a good coat of wax then it will look grand.

Here are two Ming dynasty (Song style) water-droppers (shui er in Chinese). The Great one shows the frog on his haunches with his front legs fully visible. The Very Good one is well formed and potted. I acquired it many years ago from C.Y. Tse a well=known Hong Kong dealer. The Great One was acquired in Beijing from a favorite dealer.

This is a strong, heavy brushpot, carved in a lotus form. This is a substantial pot: the base is a separate piece of art: it was specially carved to fit this pot, its shape and the pot are congruent. The whole piece is heavy, it is not new. H 15.6 + cm x D 14 cm

Category says this is Japanese, it is Chinese and I cannot change. drum is rosewood, probably not zitan; frog is stone -- serpentine? These are two very well done toggles. The ball inside the drum moves, the lotus seeds on the top and bottom move. They make the sound of a drum being hit during a Chinese opera or somesuch. Well carved, excellent condition. The stone frog is also very nice, a sleek frog, not a jumping one.
