All brushpots I have seen are either straight from top to bottom or gently taper inward from the top to bottom. This is a convex one: the sides slightly bulge from top to bottom. It has a well-carved rim area and at the bottom of the bulge. This is a l8th early 19th Century huanghuali brushpot.

This is a large cedar wood brushpot, carved to resemble a tree trunk. Ir 20 cm diameter, 21.5 cm high. Condition is excellent. There are markings on the bottom: one is the mark of the store at which I purchased this -- but I have no idea where that was or is. The other is a red wax seal showing it re-entered China (not a departure seal). And then my own inventory seal.

This is a very nice zitan plaque. It shows a tiger on the side in Frame 1, including the beast's claws. On the other side, Frame 2 an unknown artisan has carved the FIVE elements of which all humans are composed: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. I have never seen this motif in anything I have ever collected. This plaque is 7 cm long and 5 cm wide. We date the piece from the late 19th century. The condition is quite good, patina fine.

This is a large lotus leave, formed to make an elegant soapstone brushwasher. The large leaf begins on the bottom, it curls gently but firmly inward. On one part of the inside we can see that one lotus flower is about to open (on the leaf near it there is a small piece missing from long ago) and one bud is still closed. On another part there are 3 little pods visible with seeds -- they do not move. A small piece of the leaf near these pods is also missing...

Here are two large lotus leaf toggles each with frogs and lotus leafs as key parts of the work. In the first 4 frames we see a fat frog nibbling on the vine of the lotus which has come through the leaf from the bottom where the vine itself begins and comes through the leaf. The frog is very large, fat. In the second toggle, the whole lotus "action" is on the underside: a large lotus pod with the seeds is seen, all seeds are in excellent condition and all move...

This is a zitan huacha (flower vase) similar to another one on this site. The opening for the flower is smaller on this one. The whole piece is a stylized lotus flower at the top, through the sides and to the bottom. There are 4 stylized petals at the top and a flower design in the base. We see one nick, one possible repair of many years ago (may NOT be a repair) and one stable crack. This is a Middle Qing vase.

This is a very good zitan vase (huacha). This object could have been used to hold a flower or two, but also for small tools (as for incense), etc. It is an elegant, tapered zitan object. It has 5 flower petals at the top, 5 little feet at the bottom. The condition is very good, just minor chips or cracks as seen in frames 4 and 5. It is about 9 cm tall and 4 cm wide at the top.

This is a wonderful reticulated rectangular box for holding incense sticks or perhaps brushes. There are dragons carved on the top and two sides and small ruyi at the ends. The top slides perfectly in and out of the box on a small track. A similar box appears at p. 101 in Wood For the Scholar's Table, usage not specified! L is 20.5 cm, width is 4.5 cm and height is 4 cm., dimensions are about the same as in the book. Made of zitan, about mid-19th century.
