This is a very good zitan vase (huacha). This object could have been used to hold a flower or two, but also for small tools (as for incense), etc. It is an elegant, tapered zitan object. It has 5 flower petals at the top, 5 little feet at the bottom. The condition is very good, just minor chips or cracks as seen in frames 4 and 5. It is about 9 cm tall and 4 cm wide at the top.

This is a wonderful reticulated rectangular box for holding incense sticks or perhaps brushes. There are dragons carved on the top and two sides and small ruyi at the ends. L is 20.5 cm, width is 4.5 cm and height is 4 cm., dimensions are about the same as in the book. Made of zitan, about mid-19th century.

This very good reticulated rectangular old rosewood box is over 200 years old. The carving is excellent, all sides, top and each end. Lotus buds and vines are on each side and at the ends. This is very old rosewood. The cover slides nicely in and out of the grooves, inside there is a little metal base. We believe this box was used to hold incense sticks -- the reticulated structure enabled air to circulate around them; one wag has suggested maybe even a medium sized brush...

This is a very large huanghuali brushpot. It is in very good condition. Great patina. It must have held many brushes in its heyday. Late Ming early Qing pot. diameter: 23 cm, height: 20.5 cm. Please note: owing to glare certain parts of this pot look strange: it is fine. There is one stable crack in the pot, in frame 5. The base may have the original plug. It was purchased in the 1980s in Tianjin, as shown by the red wax seal in the base.

Originally, I thought this was an Yixing teapot. I now think not. Rather it is a Japanese ceramic teapot modeled on a tetsubin, a cast iron Japanese teapot. The last image shows the seal of a maker or a kiln, we do not know. Tetsubin are not rare, ceramic pots modeled on them are. Late 19th Century. (Some teapots used in Hanto prints of Haku Maki look quite like this one..)

This is a small but not miniature yixing teapot. It it made to hold just enough tea for pouring into one cup. It is so well-patinated and used that we cannot read the maker's mark on the bottom. But it is old and just the pot for someone who drinks alone. Late 19th Century, Yixing teaware. It is 15 cm from mouth to handle; H 6.5 cm

This is a late 19th Century well-designed and well-cared for three layer "food box". In its conception, each layer should have been to hold food. But over time, given the high quality of the wood, it may have graced a scholar's table and held scholar's implements. All the brass work is either original or very old. Patina is excellent Condition is very good. Only it knows what it did. Late Qing. Measurements following.

This brushwasher is decorated with frogs. The well-carved frogs have all been washed with gold. The washer at first glance seems a bit crude; but the golden frogs are very well done. The Length is 16cm, width is 10.5cm, and the height is 6.5cm. The rosewood stand was made in Beijing by a local master craftsman.

This elegant cup is made of a burl and sits here very quietly. It is stunningly simplistic, no carving and just waiting to be grasped and used. It is probably a kind of brushwasher or a vessel for pouring water on to an inkstone. 19th Century

This tray was carved in the late 18th early 19th century. It is in the shape of a large lotus leaf. The leaf can be seen rising from the bottom of the tray to the top. Its edges are naturally carved to resemble the leaf curling in. The curling is quite uniform. To make a statement the unknown Qing carver placed a strong and active frog at one end: he is sitting, ready to pounce. His eyes are alive. The whole tray is elegant but also active...

This is Jiao xiang, a sedan chair box. Used by scholar-officials to carry their documents and writing implements from post to post. This is NOT of a great wood, but today it is still a rare piece of furniture/scholar's art in Beijing. Probably made of elm. This is complete, good condition. Serviceable and very good lines. This box had been a bit rickety for a long time, I have simply had it put back in order: no wood needed to be replaced, so none was...
