A beautiful burl wood Chinese snuff bottle that is 6 cm high, width is 4 cm. Its cover is carved to look like a crown; or perhaps a flower in the process of opening. This zitan box is for carrying silver chopsticks to a banquet. In less amiable days, silver chopsticks were used to test food to see if it was or was not poisoned. If the silver chopsticks turned black, the food had arsenic in it. Today: as a courtesy to guests, silver chopsticks may still be used. The box is a lighter than normal zitan, the top fits snugly into the box and needs to be gently pushed to open and close. Probably early 20th Century.

This bamboo incense "tube" probably dates to the early Qing, circa 1700. The bamboo is well-patinated, the carving is clear in well-incised. Shown are, among other things, scholar-officials ambling amongst pine trees. The ends of the tube have been closed with hand-carved rose-wood ends (they may be 25 years old). L. about 18 cm.

This very old pot -- it has many wrinkles on the rim and all over the pot -- is of an unknown wood. It shows a Monkey or an abstract human and maybe some tree. It is so ugly as to be very beautiful indeed. I make no claim about the wood; it is neither zitan nor huanghuali but probably of some extinct Chinese wood. H is 13 cm, diameter is 12 cm. It has had a long history of travel: Beijing, Hong Kong, the US and now it is back in China. Where will it go next?

This huge bamboo frog is 15 cm long from nose to rear end, about 11 cm across. There is green stone where his nose ought to be; I do not know the stone or its meaning. A green nose, not a bloody nose? The condition is excellent, patina is nice, best on the bottom.

This is a very attractive carved bamboo snuff bottle, with its own rosewood display stand. I think this snuff bottle is about 100 years old. The bamboo is very well carved, with the shape of a fruited vine with gourd. It is full-bodied. Fine patina. Well-hollowed. The bottle is 2" tall, 1-5/8 " wide and 1-1/4 : deep.

This is a beautifully done baimu (cypress) box for an inkstone. The name of the carver is on the box, the condition of the box is very good, with one exception: there is a piece of wood missing at the rim of the lower half of the box: this can be repaired if the buyer wishes. This elegant tobacco container is beautifully carved and has been well-cared for. Many many years ago: it was repaired in a poor way -- I have not tried to re-do this repair. This container is made of huangyangmu (boxwood). It measures 7 cm high, width is 6 cm and diameter is about 2 cm. Fine patina, sharp carving on both sides and on the top and bottom. Comes with fitted box (not shown). Surely, an elegant toggle accompanied this tobacco case.

This is a miniature altar table, modeled on a larger one. This one may have been used to display inkstones, we may use it to display toggles. It is graceful and elegant, with a fine patina. It has a few marks left by cups or small brushpots over the years. and one possibly hairline crack visible on the bop. These minor defects cannot be removed by us in Beijing: that would kill the patina.

This is a very good Yixing "sanxianghu": Yixing claypot inside, wrapped with pewter on the outside, finished off with old jade (qing yu) original pieces at the handle, lid and spout. Calligraphy on one side, flowers on the other. This one has no mark in the base. The calligraphy is by one Su Chuan, a scholar of the 19th century. Very nice pot. Very good patina but a little dirty in places. We have not cleaned the pewter: that is for the next home!

This is an ivory toggle showing two huans, a mythical Chinese animal. (It could also depict two lions..) The two "huan" are chasing each other. The carving is truly great: every line that should be there is there. This is an old toggle and as such is not in perfect condition. It seems to have a small nick in one paw, I believe. This is an authentic full maizhen, made of chicken wing wood (Jichimu): we have never seen one in many years of collecting. It folds together perfectly for the Chinese medical doctor to carry with him The patina on the maizhen itself is great, evidence of much use and many presumably cured patients.

This lingzhi fungus took many years to grow and it has been with me for many years. It was used in the Qing dynasty to decorate the scholar's studio; it is in excellent condition. No nicks which might have been present if it had been used in Chinese medicine. Its beauty lies in its rustic appearance. Note: it will have a stand made to show it off even better. It is 35 cm long, 22.5 cm high and 13 cm thick. The stand has been made by Beijing Master Cao. It too is a work of art.

This is a huanghuali huacha. That literally means it is a flower (bud) vase but could also hold incense sticks, small tools, etc. As the photos show, this is two pieces: the main cylinder is 14 cm tall, the feet are another 1 cm. The diameter is 5 cm at the top, about 4.5 cm at the bottom. The piece is thus beautifully almost not noticeably tapered from top to bottom. This is a paperweight of a stone I do not know. It is well-carved into a Buddha's hand, no seeming defects. There is a little lizard elegantly carved on the top of the "hand". It is made of Qingtian (Chingtian) stone, which comes from Zhejiang, in East China. Qingtian has a long history in China, it is an important even famous stone. It is warm to the touch, it has a stand for viewing.

Palm wood brushpots are very rare. I believe I have only seen one, in the collection of a well-known American collector. None ever seen in the Beijing market.
