This is a large thread holder. Probably 4 colors of thread are wound around each of the 4 sections of this holder. Each section has a moving ball. When this contraption is used, it must have been not only colorful but had a very nice sound. It has been seen by friends int he Northeast and in South China, but must have been carved in the North. This is a typical boxwood product, a proto-toggle in the eyes of one friend.

This is a very beautiful zitan brushwasher. The whole item is actually one big lotus leaf, beginning at the bottom underneath. The leaf curls up to the top, it looks like waves but not so. The curves of the leaf curl up to the top and then fold in. The whole piece is elegant and the patina fine. It is about 7 cm long, 5 cm wide and not quite 3 cm high. Middle Qing. The photograph at the back of the first image suggest a piece missing: this is not the case...

This is a fly whisk made with a zitan handle. The zitan piece has been gently carved as shown in Frame 2. It is probably 100 + years old. Nice patina and zitan "grain" can be seen. The condition is excellent. The horse tail may not be old but the whole piece is quite attractive.

Belt buckles of this quality rarely make it to market. The loops at the back are broken through age, carelessness and use. This one, although quite old: has survived intact. There is a dragon or some other mythical (a jilin?) animal carved on the face.

A Triptych of frog "toggle" and toggle. The objects on the left are strictly speaking not toggles: there are no holes for stringing a cord through. They were used as little paper weights, in all likelihood. The legs of the frogs are straight, not folded in. The third object has folded in legs, could have been used as toggle or a paper weight. The condition of the 3 varies: one on far left: OK. A little wounded and may not be zitan...
