Here are two large lotus leaf toggles each with frogs and lotus leafs as key parts of the work. In the first 4 frames we see a fat frog nibbling on the vine of the lotus which has come through the leaf from the bottom where the vine itself begins and comes through the leaf. The frog is very large, fat. In the second toggle, the whole lotus "action" is on the underside: a large lotus pod with the seeds is seen, all seeds are in excellent condition and all move...

This is a large lotus leave, formed to make an elegant soapstone brushwasher. The large leaf begins on the bottom, it curls gently but firmly inward. On one part of the inside we can see that one lotus flower is about to open (on the leaf near it there is a small piece missing from long ago) and one bud is still closed. On another part there are 3 little pods visible with seeds -- they do not move. A small piece of the leaf near these pods is also missing...

This is a very nice zitan plaque. It shows a tiger on the side in Frame 1, including the beast's claws. On the other side, Frame 2 an unknown artisan has carved the FIVE elements of which all humans are composed: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. I have never seen this motif in anything I have ever collected. This plaque is 7 cm long and 5 cm wide. We date the piece from the late 19th century. The condition is quite good, patina fine.

This is a large cedar wood brushpot, carved to resemble a tree trunk. Ir 20 cm diameter, 21.5 cm high. Condition is excellent. There are markings on the bottom: one is the mark of the store at which I purchased this -- but I have no idea where that was or is. The other is a red wax seal showing it re-entered China (not a departure seal). And then my own inventory seal.

All brushpots I have seen are either straight from top to bottom or gently taper inward from the top to bottom. This is a convex one: the sides slightly bulge from top to bottom. It has a well-carved rim area and at the bottom of the bulge. This is a l8th early 19th Century huanghuali brushpot.

This is a large huanghuali. brushpot carved to resemble a segment of a tree trunk The carving is vigorous and robust. It is 17.5 cm tall, 20 cm wide at the widest point, 17 at the narrowest point. This pot may be as old as 200 years old. A new plug is in the bottom, which is full of "wrinkles" showing its age.

This is a seemingly wild brushpot or scroll pot. This is the actual root system of what was once a tree: it has been pulled from the ground, cleaned and "enhanced" a bit but mainly left alone. Many years ago it must have been cleaned up but is otherwise as it was sometime in the Middle Qing. It could hold 1-2 scrolls, a number of brushes and look smashing on the desk of a scholar or artist. Measurements coming...

This is a pair of modest sized bamboo cups. They are in excellent condition. Late 19th Century. Each cup is about 5 cm diameter and 5 cm high. This is not a perfect pair, but almost so. The flower is magnolia. These design on each cup is basically the same, although there are minor differences between the two. Very nice patina.

This is a strong, heavy brushpot, carved in a lotus form. This is a substantial pot: the base is a separate piece of art: it was specially carved to fit this pot, its shape and the pot are congruent. The whole piece is heavy, it is not new. H 15.6 + cm x D 14 cm

This is very well carved diabolo (a toy). There are two lotus pods making up the diabolo: on one side is a frog, decorated with small pieces of mother of pearl set on one pod; the other has 7 lotus seeds set on the pod. The patina is very good, the color a rich dark brown. Condition is excellent.

Here are two Ming dynasty (Song style) water-droppers (shui er in Chinese). The Great one shows the frog on his haunches with his front legs fully visible. The Very Good one is well formed and potted. I acquired it many years ago from C.Y. Tse a well=known Hong Kong dealer. The Great One was acquired in Beijing from a favorite dealer.

This is a crusty brushpot, it has not been refinished, all its tree nodules are there. It needs a good coat of wax then it will look grand.
