This Maki print has had a charmed existence. It was printed in Japan in the mid-70s, just as Maki was beginning to leave the production of prints with kanji as the main theme and start doing then with Ceramics, mainly in the Collection series. This is the second print of his long ceramics series – some of which were simply entitled as this is with the year 75-59. This was done in 1975 and was a quite large edition 201...

On studying this print, I was challenged by what Maki meant. Did he not get it right when he gave us a black sun? It looks so dark and foreboding even on the sunny wall in our residence in Beijing. If not a black sun, what color? The ranges are shown above. Or because the theme is a rather dark weapon, did he actually mean to do a dark image? one friend has said Maki would not do a war like image he did here

This Maki Big Red has the Kanji (Chinese character) for Flower as its theme. The Flower is red and strong; it is set off by a black Sun to the right. A blue tear balances the sun on the left. Maki’s seal in red ink paste, is below the tear, also at the left. Although Maki himself printed this image, the ink looks as if it was layered on by hand. This is 133/154; Print size is about 11” x 18”. We note: the paper in this print is smooth, it does not have the moon-surface effect...

Haku Maki did quite a number of prints using persimmon as a main theme Probably well over 100 He also began doing prints with ceramics around 1980 He probably did more than 100 ceramics theme prints. But the two there only came together in the persimmon and blue vase print shown here (and in an equally rare one with a persimmon and a strikingly beautiful yellow vase,) “This persimmon and vase print was done in the mid-70s and is quite rare: I have only seen the one shown here...

Haku Maki was undoubtedly Japan’s most prolific print maker of the second half of the 20th century. Many of his works were serious works of kanji and also ceramics. These three are perhaps a bit frivolous. The are actually pretty: each one has seeming globs of color The blue one on the left has kanji in the blue stone; the central one has a wonderful black kanji for Mountain in the center, and the one on the right four globs, each of a different color. And one splash.

dramatic kanji sun and splash This small Maki print epitomizes the Maki style at its height; the kanji streaks across the print, now it is blue now it is black; there is a strong black sun and a sharp yellow plash and the Maki seal. Yet it is not crowded. The maki seal at the right is a roll, the Maki of his name.

I was wrong Maki actually used this surface in 1971 for a few Persimmon prints and then not again until 1981 I show here copies from my Maki archives. When we filed those images a long time ago, they were not clear enough, are still not. But I think they are with that leather like finish. Any views Most gratefully received...

Haku Maki was a well-known Japanese print maker of the second half of the 20th century About 20 of his work was called Big Red and a few Big Blue or Big Green. This is one of the rare big blue prints. By my reckoning he did about three true Big Blues, this is one of the 3. Until this true image appeared I only knew of a catalogue image which we enhanced into a nice blue here in Beijing. This is the Real Deal...

In the mid-1960s, Haku Maki was firmly launching his career as an important Japanese print maker. He did a series of prints of which a long and key series was the Alphabet A – Z. In turn, the Alphabet was the first series of what came to be many series of prints, all of which Maki called the Poem series. Prints in the Poem series continued to be produced until 1972. Poem 70-73 Taiwa (Level or peace), 31/106, 17.5”x 24.5”. Haku Maki produced this big green print in 1970. His Big prints—large for him—appeared mainly in the period 1968-75. This print, the only horizontal one of all his Big prints, depicts the kanji for Level, Peace and the like. I believe it has other meanings. When I first saw this image many years ago but had not seen the bottom margin clearly, I thought it was a stylized rendition of Woman, a very frequent Maki subject. ...

Haku Maki was a prolific artist of modern Japanese prints in the second half of the 20th century. Many of his prints are known but quite a few remain unseen, even in the Internet age. The Emanation series was large: Maki probably produced more than 100 different prints in the series. At this advanced age, I have only seen about 30 of the Emanation prints—and have only managed to acquire a few. In Emanation 65B Maki has produced a very colorful print: the red core is set off by the orange stri...
