Haku Maki was undoubtedly Japan’s most prolific print maker of the second half of the 20th century. Many of his works were serious works of kanji and also ceramics. These three are perhaps a bit frivolous. The are actually pretty: each one has seeming globs of color The blue one on the left has kanji in the blue stone; the central one has a wonderful black kanji for Mountain in the center, and the one on the right four globs, each of a different color. And one splash.

Poem 70-73 Taiwa (Level or peace), 31/106, 17.5”x 24.5”. Haku Maki produced this big green print in 1970. His Big prints—large for him—appeared mainly in the period 1968-75. This print, the only horizontal one of all his Big prints, depicts the kanji for Level, Peace and the like. I believe it has other meanings. When I first saw this image many years ago but had not seen the bottom margin clearly, I thought it was a stylized rendition of Woman, a very frequent Maki subject...

I first saw this print in a small pamphlet from white lotus gallery in Oregon, acquired the print in ways that Du Yuesheng would be proud of and it has rested here for over two years It is a small print but it packs a punch It shows a prancing dancing woman What do you think? the kanji in the center of the print is set off by a tear at the left and a sun at the right. 5.75” x 8.5”

This is a surprisingly good kanji It was done in 1972 slightly beyond Maki’s core period for such small kanji. It is the kanji for Mu or Nothing It is a very abstract character more so than most of Maki’s rendering of Nothing this image is sharp it is concise and it has drive. It has the Maki style and balance : a seal and the bottom margin. It looks sharp the seal at the right is balanced off by the splash at the left

Poem 70-72. This striking Maki Big Red has had a long history for being just 40 years old. It has seen the world and is now back in Asia, in Beijing. This is as near to Tokyo, where it was created by Maki, that it has been in many years. Around 1960 Haku Maki probably did the Ox as a woodblock print. He was then a young artist in Tokyo. He may have done some OX images before Michener did his now well known book, but probably not many: 510 were used in the book The Modern Japanese Print". The prints of Japanese artists included in the book are large-ish, it is not embossed...

The Portland Art Museum has very recently begun to put its holdings of prints of Haku Maki on its site. These cover a wide range of Maki art: from the very earliest days of his works until the 1980s. The listing is particularly exciting because it shows several very early prints I have never seen. These are shown in the first 3 images of this listing. At the beginning, Maki’s images were abstract, embossed and small editions...

In 1968 Haku Maki produced this large Blue image of Child. The blue is vivid and the yellow face is in sharp contrast. To the far right is a small Green Child, the same theme, different key color. It appeared in 1969. The red image is a trial run for a Festive Wine print. It never made it. The translators of Festive Wine or Anne Brannen nixed it and used a different Child image the fifth frame...

In 1976 Maki did three pairs of prints in which the black and white were reversed. One set is shown here the cement blocks were used to print the white on black, then cleaned to do black on white these were done in such in such themes as Mind Wind and Cloud these are strong sweepings images in rather large prints. The two Wind images here are typical of the type. They are all about 15” x 20 “ and in editions of 150.

Frame 8 is the same image but done with a yellow sun and purple moon. It is 33/50. This suggests many of the first 33 and then some were done this way ; then Maki did not use these colors. I do not own this print the paper has the same wavy condition that Huge Woman had before restoring; in frame 9 I show Huge Noting it is in he Portland Museum of art. Last image is Work 73-54 (Fish) 54/54 Moon is concave sun is convex

In the early 1980s Haku Maki produced this unusual print. It has a kanji bottom margin (Mountain and Water) and is only slightly embossed. It is as if he started to do a lithograph and then decided to emboss it a bit It is a modest size print and not spectacular. By the time he did this print Maki had finished with embossed kanji and ceramics and was heading toward less compelling work. The design here is interrupting the abstract part for Mountain is also OK. But the print has no drama an...

In late 2011 I received several maki prints of 1981 these all have leather like surfaces: I thought this was a phenomenon of that year. I was wrong Maki actually used this surface in 1971 for a few Persimmon prints and then not again until 1981 I show here copies from my Maki archives. When we filed those images a long time ago, they were not clear enough, are still not. But I think they are with that leather like finish. Any views Most gratefully received.
