Officials used the scepter to wave visitors in to an audience . with the emperor or other senior officials This is an elaborate carved lacquer scepter. The term ruyi was used to tell the visitor he was waved in for the audience. When officials retired they may have been given one. We have seen these made of wood, jade and other valuable materials.
