A large and very impressive Chinese inscribed hardwood plaque, dating from the mid-19th century, during the latter part of the Qing Dynasty. This imposing plaque has four large Chinese characters carved with rounded edges into the center panel, The Four Big Characters may be translated as "Both his Age and his Moral Character are Excellent". There is a longer inscription in smaller, beautifully rendered characters to each side. This plaque was presented as a birthday present to a person whose name was Ren Tingxun in 1849, in the penultimate year of the reign of the Daoguang Emperor. Daoguang was emperor from 1821-1850, during the infamous Opium Wars The plaque was given to Mr. Ren by relatives and friends, especially people with the surname Ren in his area. (We believe he lived in Shandong province in North China, not that far from Beijing.) The plaque was presented to Ren on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
