This is a seemingly wild brushpot or scroll pot. This is the actual root system of what was once a tree: it has been pulled from the ground, cleaned and "enhanced" a bit but mainly left alone. Many years ago it must have been cleaned up but is otherwise as it was sometime in the Middle Qing. It could hold 1-2 scrolls, a number of brushes and look smashing on the desk of a scholar or artist. Measurements coming. Please note: the color of the actual pot is the natural wood color although patinated. It is not the reddish hue in the pictures, two of which -- Panels 2 and 12 are the correct color. This pot 10 1/4 high and about the same wide at the top. More measurementc coming.
