This is an awesome soapstone Stone Mountain with two monkeys. This is a stunning desk ornament. It is one piece of soapstone: the stand is dark stained soapstone. The Mountain has faded into a greyish stone, rich with glistening patina. The two monkeys are carved rather roughly, but still look fine. Their eyes are filled with pearl dust, giving them a lustrous look. This is an early 19th Century piece. "When the tiger leaves his Mountain Lair, the Monkeys all scream they are ba-wang (hegemons, tigers)." Here they have had the gall to take over the mountain! This ornament was probably done in the South, maybe Jiangsu. The Mountain is 15 cm tall and 14 cm wide. The "stand" is an additional 5 cm high. Width is also 5 cm. wide.
