the full name of the very talented sculpture Jan Mattheus Gerrits, he was born on May 31, 1844 and died on March 29, 1922.
He was a wood sculptor and created many church furnishings. In 1890 we owe him the Altar of the Church of St. Catherine (Sint-Catharinakerk) in Hoogstraten and in 1915 the Oak Chair of the Church of St. Anthony of Padua (Sint-Antonius van Paduakerk) in Antwerp. His last sculpture is a monumental Christ the King commissioned by the city of Lier, which his sons completed because of the disease that prevailed.
The inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be site, which lists Heritage in Belgium, draws up a more complete list of works known by Jan Gerrits.
His body rests in the cemetery of Sint-Fredegandus te Deurne (Antwerpen).
Two of his sons were sculptors including Bruno Franciscus Gerrits (1881-1971), who in turn acquired great notoriety.
