This unique object is used to identify the owners of an ox cart. Complete With Custom Stand as Photographed. The stand is not permanently attached so the item is easily removeable. Beautiful Patina.
It is lashed to the tongue of an ox cart (see photo of rope wear) to which the oxen are harnessed. It extends our beyond and above the oxen. Each one is unique and typically represents something unique related to the family and/or individual owner of the oxcen or cart ie astrological signs, property etc. IE astrological signs, about the family or individual owner(s) of the oxen and cart. These objects tend to be ancestral.
This example is carved in the form of a comorat with a fish in its beak. This is a symbol of plenty. A monkey sits at his back.
Possibly representing the year of the monkey, the astrological sign of the original owner. At the back is a stylized naga, mythological creature believed to provide protection.
I have included a location photograph that I took of a similar object in use. Object collected in Kamphong Thom, north of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
