This bronze statue features the medicine buddha sitting on a double lotus pedestal. The lotus may be shown with eight petals, symbolic of the Noble Eightfold path. Lotus flowers were associated with purity and spiritual perfection, and are frequently used in Buddhist art. Double lotus throne is known as "visvapadmasana". The historical Buddha Gautama often called himself as the healer of suffering in the world, and explained that Dharma was the medicine. The idea is that Gautama can be invoked in case of a disease to reveal the correct healing method to both the doctor and the sick person. Medicine is often seen holding a bowl or a ball.
