Framed woodblock print by Kyoto artist, Clifton Karhu. "Afternoon in Gion" shows an image down a street in this well-known distrct of Kyoto. Signed and dated, 1978, #17 of edition of 100. Image size: H.16 x W.16", Frame size: H.22 x W.21.5". Print and frame are both in good condition. Clifton Karhu was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1927. Karhu printed these invitations for his shows at the Tolman Collection, the Tokyo gallery which has long represented him and his work. These were done in large numbers, about 800, in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This particular print reads "banji wa tanoshimu beshi," Whatever You Do, Enjoy It, a very Zen-like saying.
