New York Watch Co. Wm. E. Harpur, Philadelphia No.7009 C: 1869 Watchmaker
He learned watchmaking with William H. C. Riggs at Front and Dock Streets, whose company made chronometers and manufactured nautical instruments. In November of 1834, at the age of 21, he was hired by noted silversmith and jeweler John Adam, in Alexandria, VA. Harpur advertised on 9 December 1834:
WM. E. HARPUR. Clock and Watch Maker, (late of Philadelphia) Respectfully informs the citizens of Alexandria, and the public generally, that he has taken the old established stand occupied by Mr. Adam, Silver Smith, and formerly occupied by Mr. Barton, where he will give particular attention to Duplex, Horizontal Lepine, Patent Lever, Repeating and Plain Watches,—Musical Boxes and Clocks repaired.
This watch we are offering is a very Rare example of one of the watches he had for sale in 1869: All original Key Wind and Key Set from the rear in its double hinged back and bezel silver case. Low number 7009. Dial signed: "Wm Harpur, Phila." Double signed Jewelers contract created by the New York Watch Co. in 1869. All mint and original, clean running and especially rare.
