A tabako bon set with a removable square shaped compartment comprised of a small hibachi, drawer, open storage space and metal swing arms to hold the pipe. The top of the removable piece has decorative copper strips going from the bronze hibachi to the compartment's corners. This Meiji era tobacco chest is made of mulberry wood, and has metal fittings for the door and drawers. The wood tube ring is probably not original and was modified. The opening which houses the hibachi/ring, has two notches, which would have allowed the original ring piece to lock into place. The replacement piece has a split, it does hold the hibachi in place. but can easily be dislodged. Please note in the photos that there is loss of wood on a drawer, the back post has loss of wood and there is an old repair on the chest's top.
