Tall and slender vase. Whitish stoneware covered in mottled, blueish green glaze over a greenish translucent glaze with fine and beautiful crackle. On top of that a colorful decoration of noh masks, perhaps reflecting a certain play. Identified are a Sojobo, king of the Tengu with his feather fan, Hannya, Okame or another sensuous woman, and an unidentified man and a brown faced monster. On the neck a white fret motive, on the shoulder a bands with checkers and dragon motive. Japan, early 20th century.

The vase itself may be of a slightly earlier date than the decoration. For the export, Japanese decorated existing stoneware vases and bottles with funny and colorful scenes that might appeal to the Westerner, rather than to the Japanese taste.
