Three small covered boxes made of bentwood (magemono), stitched at the overlap. Outer sides of the boxes and the covers brushed and covered with reddish brown lacquer, the insides and bottoms covered with black lacquer. Label on bottom of largest box. Cotton bag. Japan, Meiji period/early 20th century. Largest box H 2 1/8; L 5; W 3 ½ inches (5,2 x 13,7 x 9 cm). Some wear at corners of boxes and cover (dents and slight warping), otherwise very good condition.
Bentwood was the predecessor of plastic in Japan. This kind of boxes was extensively used and was not meant to last.
