Wonderful large carved wooden face of a man. His mouth is open wide and whiskers splay outward. He has a wide nose and large eyes. He appears to be wearing an oval shaped hat on which is carved an animal of some sort with long striped tail and clawed feet. The wood is beautifully worn from years of weather and rain. There are traces of white and yellow paint. Thailand. Early 19th century. Size: 24" high x 17" wide x 3 1/2" deep.

Unusual secondary burial jar carved of white limestone in the form of a person. Wonderfully sculpted with the head and shoulders making up the lid portion of the jar. The body of the jar is carved with the person's arms in low relief while the rest of the jar maintains an ovoid form. Kulaman Plateau, Cotobatu, Philippines.

Antique Thai sandstone statue fragment of the Ayutthaya style Buddha's torso. One arm remains attached to the body while the full statue sits in the lotus meditation pose. She is sitting on a pedestal in a Lalitasana posture (one leg folded inwards), and making hand gestures called Mudra, which hold special meaning in Buddhism. Her left hand is shown making the Vitarka Mudra, symbolizing intellectual discussion, and her right hand is making the Varada Mudra to symbolize gift giving. She has a lotus flower wrapped around her body, which symbolizes good fortune and purification of the spirit...

Antique Bronze hand of Buddha from Thailand. The hand itself holds different meanings, depending on how it is being gestured. Fingers up and palm facing outwards means fearlessness and protection, fingers down and palm outwards means gift giving or bestowal, and fingers down and palm inwards is the gesture of earth witness, which Buddha is said to have been made during his Enlightenment. There is a lotus flower in the palm, which represents good fortune and purification of the spirit...

Antique stone carving of Ganesha, the deity, deva, associated with the removal of obstacles. It was carved in the 19th century, acquired in Kathmandu in the 1960s. It measures 2.25" tall, 1"3/8" deep by 2" wide at base.

A carved wooden mask from Indonesia depicting a deity or a spirit. The mask contains some pigment that once covered the surface. Topengs are used on the islands of Java and Bali and used during religious processions and ceremonies depicting the stories of the Hindu gods. An Indonesian Mask carved in the form of a monkey. The mask is carved into two separate section, one is the top area of the head and the bottom is the jaw area. The mask is attached with a head covering made from strips of leather. The islands of Java and Bali are the two key regions that have the art of mask dancing often depicting religious stories. Sculpted from soft white volcanic tuff from central Java of a Majaphit royal princess. Her coiffure is pulled back and topped with a lotus tiara, and she wears a pair of foliated looped earrings. The rendering of her delicate features is very reminiscent to classical Indian sculptures.

The Majaphit empire is the last Indianized kingdom in Indonesia. Based in eastern Java, it existed between the 13th and 16th centuries...
