Antique Nepalese bronze figures of Yama Dharmaraja and Yami in tantric embrace. The buffalo headed Buddhist protector, Lord of Death and Justice stands with his consort. He tramples a male buffalo with one foot, a female victim with the other. He brandishes a skull-tipped stick in his right hand and his hair streams out in flames behind his horns.

Antique Chinese pair of ornately carved gilt wood panels. Each panel is a mirror of the other and depicts a scholarly display of flowers in an elaborately carved vase. Among the flowers are lotus, peonies, berry stalks and blossoming fruit branches. Attracted to the berries, are a pair of kingfishers. Each vase stands on a multi tiered display with scrolls in boxes and upright containers surrounded by bats and kylin (qilin)...

Antique Japanese wooden bowl carved in the form of a wide lotus leaves. On the inside of the bowl, a frog with turquoise eye climbs the stalk of a lotus blossom. Two more frogs cling to curling leafy edges. The underside of the bowl is carved like the underside of a lotus leaf including it's spiraling stalk.

Antique Tibetan wooden sutra cover, carved with 58 seated bodhisattvas on the front, gilded and painted with details. The interior side of the cover is lacquered red and painted with 64 seated bodhisattvas. Each figure is seated and with different mudras. The left side edge of the cover, is deeply carved with the head of a guardian demon flanked by scrolling vines...

Extremely rare Japanese antique usagi (rabbit or hare) mask for a Noh performance. Carved of wood and covered with gofun, a raised paste made from ground oyster shells. The surface of the usagi mask is carefully textured so that every hair is visible and some areas are polished from wear. The eyes of the hare are a pink color, similar to those of an albino snow rabbit.

Usagi is the creature most closely associated with the moon...

Antique Thai gilt cast bronze figure of a recumbent temple deer. These sika deer are closely associated with the Buddha because of his "Teaching in the Deer Park" in Sarnath. Buddha's teaching, or "Spinning the Wheel of the Law" further links the deer to this sacred event. Thus deer are often depicted with the Wheel of the Law, or Dharmachakra in a temple setting. With one leg bent under his body and one outstretched, the deer turns a long, graceful neck to look back over it's shoulder...

A two section antique Japanese Isho Biraki Tansu (stacked clothes chest with hinged doors) made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. Original bronze hardware and a center Kuwanoki (Mulberry) wood door decorative overlap. Very well constructed with thick wood, straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails. The doors open to four removable kimono trays.

Originally used for kimono and clothes storage, the classic design works well in any home decor...

Antique Japanese ceramic figure of the moon faced Otafuku. Her name was once Uzume and evolved into Okame which means "tortoise", a symbol of longevity. Otafuku or Okame is considered the goddess of mirth, a cheerful woman who's name means "abundant good fortune". Chinese antique celadon vase, carved with flowers and scrolling leaves. Lovely traditional celadon color glaze. Later addition of decorative silver overlay around mouth and shoulders and also a silver ring around the foot of the vase.

Antique Japanese tsuba (hand guard for samurai katana) decorated with a monkey peeking though the bamboo rails of a cage or gate. Often occurring in Japanese folk tales, the monkey generally symbolizes a trickster. Since tsuba were often a warrior's source of personal expression, it is likely this monkey held specific significance to the blade's owner.

An antique Japanese Ranma (transom) that was highly detailed and hand carved out of Akita Suginoki (Cryptomeria from the Akita region) with a Hinoki (Cypress) frame. It features a landscaped Shinto shrine grounds complete with the shrine complex, pine trees, clouds, a Torii gate, a Pagoda, and a beautiful footbridge. The image is carved on both sides to show the front and back of the complex.
