A decorative pair of antique Japanese lacquer boxes called kaioke, once used for storing painted shells for the game of kaiawase (shell matching). The boxes are black lacquer with beautiful gilt pigment spiraling mon (family crest) on the sides and lid. Incised metal hardware adorns each leg and around the lid. They are kept closed with long pieces of rope with tassels. Beautiful condition.
