An antique Japanese Ranma (transom) that was highly detailed and hand carved out of Akita Suginoki (Cryptomeria from the Akita region) with a Hinoki (Cypress) frame. It features a landscaped Shinto shrine grounds complete with the shrine complex, pine trees, clouds, a Torii gate, a Pagoda, and a beautiful footbridge. The image is carved on both sides to show the front and back of the complex.

The Ranma was used in Japan typically above the Fusuma sliding doors between rooms to provide air circulation and comfort especially during the hot summer months in Japan. Judging by the quality of this carving, it was most likely displayed in a wealthy home or a very fancy Ryokan (country inn).

Contemporary uses of this transom would include displaying it as a headboard or hanging it where both sides can be viewed showing the expert workmanship entailed in this piece.

Age: Meiji/Taisho (circa 1910-1920)

Dimensions: 72" Wide x 15 5/8" High x 2 3/4" Deep
