Set of 4 Victorian sterling silver place card holders. Made by Saunders and Shepherd in Chester in 1899. Each: A rifle is propped against a shilling coin dated 1899, the year war broke out in South Africa between the British and Dutch colonial settlements. The rifle is the famous Lee-Metford, which was by then a tad old fashioned, but still considered reliable by British as well as Dutch troops, who made use of captured specimens. Six pearl handled luncheon knives with sterling silver ferules. The ferules are decorated with a classic scrolling vine motif. The French-style blades are unusually long in relation to the pearl handles--a proportion that gives this set a particularly elegant appeal. The blades are marked with a "12" designating the highest quality of 19th century American silverplate. Pearl handled knives are more frequently found in the larger dinner size.

A lovely pair of white paste earrings closed back set in silver gilt. Approximately 18 MM or .7 inches in width, these well scaled earrings can be dressed up or down. Made of "paste", a special glass and lead formula originating from George Ravenscroft, a London glassmaker, during the 17th century and perfected by a French jeweler Georges Strass in the 18th century. Each "paste" was handcarved to fit the setting. Paste has become very collectible and desirable and can no longer be made today...

This porcelain plate was produced in Germany by the Royal Berlin Porcelain Manufactory, or KPM, in 1919. The date ciphers indicate this year. The plate is 8 ¾ inches in diameter. The porcelain is delicate and translucent with a reticulated border. The decoration is beautifully hand painted with the “soft paste paint” style. There is a fragile dragonfly hovering near the realistically painted flowers. The reticulated pattern on the border is outlined in gold and the rim is also gilded.
