English blue and white transfer printed plate by Clews, Staffordshire, c 1820. Clews (1818-1834) produced patterns with motifs intended for the American market. This pattern in a soft blue shade, however, is of a guide demonstrating some Italian classical ruins to a lady traveller seated on a donkey, all viewed as from inside a grotto. An extremely fine example of a saltglaze plate with a scalloped rim and a molded, or embossed, border.
The diameter is 9 1/4" and the condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, or restoration. There are 3 very minor small brown spots on the front due to kiln impurities. It is very unusual to find them in this condition. The color of the paste might appear slightly different in the photos, but that is due to the lighting and reflection.

This is a well washed and loved red calico doll quilt. It is mostly treadle machine stitched with some hand sewing. The backing is a brown and cream calico print with a brown calico boarder on both front and back. It is very soft, faded a couple of tiny holes that gives it that great old worn look. This is my kind of quilt, old and worn and I realize it is not for everyone.
It is 16" square and is from the 1890's with a Pennsylvania verbal history. (I love it.)
