A Japanese porcelain “100 Boys” plate, 18th century.

This unusual plate was made in Arita between 1720 and 1760. It shows a hall crammed with boys, an elevated youthful figure surrounded by attendants, two of which are carrying fans. To me it looks like the interior of a temple with children depicting the abbot and gathering of monks. Above the Abbot can be found a sign, Hyakushindo, “The Hall of 100 Children.” ( Baizitang in Chinese )...

A large plate decorated in the three colour sancai palette with a central Peony motif with three reserves one with Peonies, emblematic of Spring, a pair of Quails beneath Millet and another with Chrysanthemums, emblematic of the months of Autumn. An identical dish is illustrated in the Shibata Collection Vol.4, #303 where it is dated to 1770~1800.

A small Japanese Arita kilns blue and white porcelain sauce dish, or mamezara, of mokko-gata form. Namban (or Nanban, Southern barbarian) decoration of a foreign figure, with dog, falconing in picturesque landscape. Painterly shironuki decoration in the cavetto of cranes flying among clouds. Edo period, Circa 1800. Good condition for its age, with two small chips inside the foot rim and a small glaze abrasion just above the foot rim. About 3 15/16 inches (10 cm) square.

An novelty Hirado porcelain moulded sake ewer in the form of a large carp with the figure of Kinko Senin hanging on to his back decorated with a combination of iron brown and cobalt blue underglaze colours. A pair of finely made and decorated Imari tokkuri (sake bottles). Bird and flowers in vase decoration rich in red enamel and gilt details over blue underglaze decoration. A pair of such high quality tokkuri is rare. Circa 1800. Both are lamped. One is otherwise in very good condition while the other has a rim chip (pictured). Height of the bottles are about 7 and 3/8 inches (about 18.73 cm)

A barbed form dish decorated in kakiwake style with a White Elephant and Chinese Boy. The design here is not the Confucian parable of Shun and the Elephants, but one that explores a Buddhist theme. The White Elephant in Buddhism is symbolic of mental strength achieved through the practice of the Dharma.
