Finely painted Satsuma chatelaine with a silver backing and chain. The porcelain disks are tapered in size with the largest being iris, followed by a peacock, then butterflies, and finally a coiled dragon. The images are surrounded with cobalt blue and gold bands. This chatelaine could easily be made into a necklace. Measures 5.25" long with the largest tile a little under 1 inch diameter and the smallest being 1/2" diameter. Dates circa 1900.

Japanese Imari Porcelain Lunch box/Jubaco with three(3) compartment with lid, 7 3/4" high with lid, 5 1/2" diameter and 2 1/8" high, 5 1/2" diameter for each compartment, Ca. 1920, decorated with typical Imari colors with character of "Happiness". Two(2) flake shallow enamel chips in red character area which is normal wear and tear over the years, overall in good condition.

19th century Japanese wooden nyoi - a Buddhist scepter - with scrolling finial. Nyoi, or Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship and transmission of knowledge. Dense fruitwood with beautiful texture, simple elegant carving, wonderful patina to the surface from being handled, old ink spots in places, very pleasant to the touch. Great subtle piece for scholar’s table, or a practicing Buddhist. Length 12 1/4 inches.

19th century Japanese kozuka (sword knife) handle with raised and incised decoration of a morning glory plant with flowers and leaves. Elegant design, excellent crisp work, wonderful warm brown patina, beautiful gilding, in very good condition. Length 3 3/4 inches.

Squaty and stout Antique Japanese iron Tetsubin with iron lid. Hailstone covering top half of kettle. Bottom half has beautiful wear with soft ridging. 19th century wooden netsuke depicting standing Hotei (one of the 7 Gods of Good Luck, also considered to be the incarnation of Maitreya - the Buddha of the future) with a peach in one hand, and the other hand resting on his voluminous belly. 18th to early 19th century wooden netsuke of two standing Chinese scholars with a huge ball between them. Wood is lacquered in Negoro style - red lacquer over black, so as it wears the black and then wood starts showing, thus adding yet another color to the piece. Some remnants of gold lacquer in recessed areas as well. Very smart use of lacquering technique, beautiful wear to the surface, really nice feel of age to the piece. Height 1 1/2 inches.

The top of this black lacquer Japanese box is heavily carved with leaves and foliage. The carved oval cinnabar panel in the center depicts a long and stable marriage scene. The standing wife has just served her sitting husband tea in the garden, outside the house surrounded by mountains. The four sides of the box are carved with continuous textile design.

The box is 5.5 inches x 4.75 inches and 2+ inches high.

Very rare Japanese comic demon Buaku Kyogen mask dating from the early Edo Period, the golden age of Noh Drama. The Buaku mask is a Kyogen version of the Noh Beshimi character. Kyogen were short, humorous skits performed between Noh acts to lighten the mood. The heavily knit brows and wide leering grimace are wonderful characteristics of this mask. This wonderful Japanese banko nodder is somewhat unusual in that his head nods side to side rather than front to back like most nodders on the market. Dating circa 1880-1899, he was hand molded as evidenced by indentations and finger prints left by the artist on the inside of the bell/body. In excellent condition with the exception of one repair to the neck. At some point in his history, the weight broke in half and was re-attached. No other condition issues, no chips, cracks...

A Fukagawa 11 7/8 inch fish service dish. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration including random butterflys. Mt. Fuji mark and Fukagawa Sei in underglaze blue inside the foot ring. Late Meiji or early Taisho. 18th to 19th century Japanese sword set of fuchi (bordering piece between the sword guard and the handle) and kashira (metal pommel at the end of the hilt of a sword) with relief decoration of multiple monkeys pulling a rope tied to a huge branch with fruit, all on finely punched ground texture called nanako, which means “fish-eggs” as it resembles fine rows of caviar. Excellent quality multimetal work, gilding, overall in excellent condition...

Late Meiji / early Taisho miniature Japanese porcelain vase depicting a family of 3 egrets in different attitudes. Perfect potting, elegant shape, beautiful underglaze powder green ground, eyes and beaks of of the birds are done in underglaze blue, in perfect condition. Signed in underglaze blue SENPO SENO SEI (Made in Senpo’s pottery) on the bottom. Height 3 3/8 inches.

A large dish used for raw fish or shellfish (mukozuke) for the tea ceremony in which guests are served. It measures at 11.75” square x 2” high. This dish is designed in the traditional Japanese ascetic of simple brush strokes and relaxed design; such a dish was not intended for export and does not conform to the Western ascetic of gaudy and over crowded design. A true testament of genuine Japanese tradition. The plate dates to the late Meiji to early Tashio period (1900-20).

This assortment of cosmetic brushes along with the small container was originally part of a large cosmetic set which would have been commissioned for the a wealthy Japanese bridal trousseaux. Many layers of the rich black roiro-nuri lacquer was applied and polished to achieve the deep lusterious tone. The brushes are accented with a 2 and 3 tone golden floral motif. None of the brushes show any signs of use...

This candlestick is fashioned from Copper with a ribbed shaft rising from a stylized chrysanthemum-form base terminating into a flower-form top with pricket to receive a candle. It has been attached to a later turned-wood base. It is for use in a Buddhist altar. Good condition.
