Alexandria, VA had a thriving salt-glazed stoneware industry throughout most of the 19th Century. Many pieces are marked with the makers name and "ALEXa" or "DC/ALEXa". Some common makers were John Swann, B.C. Milburne, H.C. Smith and E.J.Miller (a retailer). We are always interested in purchasing examples of Alexandria stoneware. An attractive double chambered bridge vessel with bow handle and a human head, body with relief decorations, Pre-columbian Chimú, 1250-1450 AD.

Size: 21,5 cm. wide and 18,5cm. tall.

Condition: Nice Very fine, hairline closed crack in the body and some light chipping of edges, othervise complete and intact.

-Reddish brown sack mask to which are fastened three gourds, one on top and one over each ear, and painted reddish brown. Rag ruff. Kilt made from a woman’s old dress. Body painted with red-brown clay. He carries a feather and a rattle. Koyemsi is the most common Hopi clown. He appears in Mixed Kachina Dances and sometimes a group of Koyemsi appear in a dance of their own. At First Mesa they are said to sing Zuni songs...

This incredibly rare Olmec spoon is made from Robin's egg translucent blue jade. It has a perfect classic Olmec mouth which is very hard to find. These spoons were used for ceremonial snuffing of hallucinogenic substances by shamans. It is 4 1/4". It has beautiful patina and weathering is obvious. I purchased it from the famous collection of Michael Robbins from Santa Fe in 1992. The last picture is a spoon sold by Sotheby's several years ago. The hammer price was $330,000.

Mexican Pre Columbian Tlatilco Terracotta group lot . Head and animal pieces. fragments from an early culture c 1200bc-600bc. Tlatilco is noted in particular for its high quality pottery pieces, many featuring Olmec iconography. Tlatilco figures were known for their elaborate hair styles. A wonderful small group of three ceramics, incl. a very large vessel shaped as a duck.

The duck vessel is around 24 cm. tall and massive, Tlatilco, Mexico, very early and rare, dating before 200 BC! One leg reattached and some minor chips. This comes with copy of the invoice from 1968!

This extremely rare and stunning museum quality Olmec standing figure is made from beautiful Olmec blue true jadeite. It measures a whopping 8 3/8" long and 2 1/2" at the shoulders. The head is just shy of 3". It dates from 1200-600BC. It is the definition of Olmec classic with the elongated head and were-jaquar mouth. It has incising along the chest, left leg and left cheek. The back is quite unusual and rare in that the head shows the figure in transformation into an avian form...
