A massive high quality unguentaria bottle made of greenish glass. Roman, Eastern Mediterranean, 2nd - 3rd century AD.
The bottle of impressive height and very solidly constructed, sound glass.
Size: c. 15,4 cm. tall.
Condition: Extremely fine, unusually solid and sound green glass vessel with beautiful mild irridescence.
Provenance: Estate of Hartmut Geerken, Germany, aquired 1961-1964!
Roman fragment with a tabula ansata inscribed DOMIN[A] VICTOR[IA], an acclamation translatable as “Lady, victory (is yours)!”
The inscription is connected to Saint Thecla, whose upper arm and blurred hand appear below.
Saint Thecla was a companion of Saint Paul, and an important figure in the Christian imagery of Roman North Africa. She enjoyed great popularity during the Byzantine period.

The animal head with flared nostrils, open mouth and bare teeth. The big eye with eyelashes, the ears laid back. Mane and tail hatched.
Trappings around the neck and the croup decorated with tiny dots. On the croup a swastika with dots in the interstices, possibly a brand...

A finely preserved pestle carved finger - hand-carved from fine white marble, Roman, 1st-3rd. cent AD.
The bent thumb pestle has a handle with stylized lines in the skin because of the bent position and a narrow tip with a carved nail bed. Round base, smooth from use.
