The top of this black lacquer Japanese box is heavily carved with leaves and foliage. The carved oval cinnabar panel in the center depicts a long and stable marriage scene. The standing wife has just served her sitting husband tea in the garden, outside the house surrounded by mountains. The four sides of the box are carved with continuous textile design.

The box is 5.5 inches x 4.75 inches and 2+ inches high.

Antique Japanese cylindrical hibachi made of bent suginoki (cryptomeria) and decorated with a maki-e lacquer scene of a family of chickens in a bamboo grove. The mother hen and two chicks look for food on the ground while their father rooster looks back at his third little chick. This carved wood box is lacquered in a deep red tone and in brownish black on the leafy area. The interior and base are lacquered in black. There are various nicks and scuffs from use and age. The interior retains its shiny finish, while the exterior had acquired a soft luster from age and wear. Acquired in Kyoto, Japan in the early 1970s.
