A fine Imari bowl and cover decorated with a pattern composed of Autumn flowers, akikusa de, and Banded hedges, shibagaki. A wheel cut Johanneum inventory number incised to the interior of the foot-ring of the bowl indicating that it belonged to the collection of Augustus the Strong, and was acquired before 1722. Both cover and bowl marked with an enamelled choji motif. The bowl and cover are in superb condition, no cracks, chips or restoration...

An intriguing and rare dish that borrows its overall arrangement from a Chinese export Kangxi precedent, but given a distinctly Japanese twist. It is a parody on the theme of the Four Gentlemanly or scholarly accomplishments, Kinkishoga or Siyi, calligraphy, painting, reading poetry and playing music, mitate-e. Here the scholars are replaced by Bijin, elegant ladies at leisure, set in a large Garden arranged in a continuous frieze that is adapted from a Chinese export plate of the Kangxi period...

A large Japanese Imari dish of saucer form with slightly everted rim decorated in underglaze blue, iron red and gilding with a central motif of a vase on a verandah containing an arrangement of Peony and Chrysanthemum flowers. The cavetto of the dish decorated with an underglaze blue brocade ground inset with three lobed reserves containing Hydrangea, Ajisai, Chrysanthemums, Kiku, and Peonies, Botan. The reverse decorated with three Peony sprigs to the reverse...

A very fine quality dish decorated with a pattern of stylised Lotus-mon with three quadrilobed reserves each containing an element of the shochikubai, pine, take, bamboo, matsu, and prunus, ume. The centre decorated with a small central roundel framed by a border of demi-florets containing a Dragon delineated in gilt with green and iron red enamels holding a jewel, tama, in its claw. The rim of the dish is decorated with a border of alternating double crested waves and gilded...

A good example of a late 17th century Arita round bodied jug or wine ewer decorated with three lobed panels each with Peonies inset in a simplified Karakusa ground with additional scroll work to the shoulder and neck of the jug incorporating further floral motifs. The jug measures 21cm high and is approximately 10.5cm in diameter...

An unusual rectangular small Koro, Incense burner, decorated in under-glaze blue, iron red and gilding set upon four small feet. Each side of the censer is decorated with bands of diaper brocade inset with rectangular panels containing stylised arabesques set against an iron red ground. The square end panels suggesting a Taotie mask. The koro is of slab construction with applied moulded feet. It measures 8cm long and 6.7cm wide and stands 7.5cm high...

Late 19th or early 20th century Japanese satsuma bowl is 2 ½ inches tall and 7 inches in diameter. It has a magnificent insect and floral design on both the interior and exterior. It has an old repair on the rim and a small hairline crack. Signed.

A very rare Kakiemon moulded dish, ozara, in a nigoshide type porcelain body dating from the first period of the Kakiemon kiln at Nangawara. The dish is moulded with various motifs and symbols of Longevity, including, a pair of cranes, pine, bamboo, a minogame, and prunus, and a pair of precious objects an artemesin leaf combined with a flywhisk. In between the framed motifs various forms of yoraku, pendant Buddhist jewels...

Decorated in underglaze blue and maroon, yellow, red, and gold enamels with floral roundels between flowering shrubs, including plum and prunus, extending over the rim into the interior. An novelty Hirado porcelain moulded sake ewer in the form of a large carp with the figure of Kinko Senin hanging on to his back decorated with a combination of iron brown and cobalt blue underglaze colours. The ewer measures approximately 23cm in length and 15 stands in height. The ewer is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or restoration and unusually it retains its original lid...

An unusual rhomboid quadrilobed form dish decorated with a landscape of islands with Pagodas within a lake or estuarine setting conceivably a composition based on the “Eight views of the Xiao and the Xiang rivers”, Shosho hakkei. The design produced largely through the use of a stencil with additional applications of wash. The technique of using paper stencils, katagamni zuri, to reproduce patterns was also used at the Nabeshima kiln...
