Edo Period, ca. early 1800s

This yatate, or traveler's pen case, is made of wrought brass, and has a long tube to hold the brush and a deep pot for the ink, which would have been saturated in a cotton wad. The lid snaps snugly over the pot to contain the ink, and a tab connected to the lid covers the end of the tube that contains the brush. Late 19th to early 20th century wooden netsuke carved in a shape of a toy bear with red lacquer symbol on its back, which is an early pictograph representing the sun. Clever design, beautiful simplicity to the object, dense hardwood, eyes are inlaid, wonderful patina. Length 2.28 inches.

18th to early 19th century iron Japanese sword tsuba inlaid with branches of maple tree with leaves turning yellow and red, roots and cresting waves below, design continuing on the back . Wonderful work with brass and copper inlays, precise detailing and well captured mood of contemplation and autumnal melancholy. The plate has a dark brown patina, overall in great condition. Maple Height 2.84 inches.

A Hizen-yaki, Arita kilns dish in the Kakiemon style. Probably after design examples from the latter kiln. The cavetto with delicate shironuki decoration of sakura blossoms on waves of water. The center undecorated save a single chrysanthemum blossom. Brown rim induced by iron oxide. The exterior with karakusa around the unglazed ring foot centering a spurious mark suggesting the Chinese Ming dynasty. Early 19th century. Good condition. Diameter about 7 3/4 and a little more in places.

18th to 19th century Japanese sword set of fuchi (bordering piece between the sword guard and the handle) and kashira (metal pommel at the end of the hilt of a sword) with relief decoration of multiple monkeys pulling a rope tied to a huge branch with fruit, all on finely punched ground texture called nanako, which means “fish-eggs” as it resembles fine rows of caviar. Antique Japanese archaic bronze vase, with geometric imagery incised into the outer body, cloisonné taotie motifs in blue, green, red, and white enamel along upper section, long medallion motifs with enamel along the lowermost section. Old, natural patina with signature on base.

Lovely Japanese antique Imari-ware porcelain bowl, eight sided, beautifully painted in traditional Imari colors with details in gold, scenes of mountain pavilions and baskets of chrysanthemums in alternating fan shaped reserves, Meiji Period. Size: 8 3/4" wide diameter x 3 1/8" high.

Finely painted Satsuma chatelaine with a silver backing and chain. The porcelain disks are tapered in size with the largest being iris, followed by a peacock, then butterflies, and finally a coiled dragon. The images are surrounded with cobalt blue and gold bands. This chatelaine could easily be made into a necklace. Measures 5.25" long with the largest tile a little under 1 inch diameter and the smallest being 1/2" diameter. Dates circa 1900.

Two(2) flake shallow enamel chips in red character area which is normal wear and tear over the years, overall in good condition.
