Antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest) made with keyaki (elm) wood burl on the front with sugi (cryptomeria) wood frame, 9 drawers and compartment with sliding panels, original finish with beautiful patina, Taisho Period. Size: 39 1/2" high x 33 3/4" wide x 16 1/2" deep.

Layer upon layer of lacquer has been carved with scrolling designs revealing the depth of the surface in a style known as Guri by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in a wooden box titled Guri Kobon. It is 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inches) and in excellent condition, the artist seal inlayed in mother of pearl beneath. The box is annotated by his adopted daughter and heir Torako (Suwa Sozan II)...

Japanese antique 2-section cha tansu (tea chest). The frame of this chest is made of solid keyaki (elm) wood and the front has persimmon wood veneer with dramatic grain. The top section has a compartment covered with four small sliding panels and a large compartment with glass sliders for display. Inside the glass display area are stepped shelves, a smaller square glass door compartment, another compartment with batik covered sliding panels depicting Mt. Fuji...

Antique Japanese gumbai, war fan. It was sued mainly as a signaling device during war. Today, they are most often seen in use by sumo referees. It measures 21.5" long 11" wide. Meiji 1868-1912. Inscribed with the Hachimandaibosatsu, in the same style of calligraphy as the Tsuruoka shrine in Kamakura. It may have been as shrine offering or a decoration in the shrine. Made of white bronze with a pewter or silver handle.

Semi round low flat fruit basket made of split woven bamboo intertwined wisteria branch. Warm red and dark tones, over all in very good condition. Beautiful keyaki wood choba tansu (merchant's chest), from the Matsumoto region of Japan. It has a beautiful allover woodgrain and has black iron hardware with iron studding. It has two sliding panels with an iron lock down its center, drawers of varying sizes with warabite handles, and a pull-away panel with a kan (ring pull) handle, opening to a small compartment. Size: 34.5" height, 31.5" width, 14.25" depth

Beautiful two-section keyaki (zelkova) tansu with a gorgeous, glowing honey lacquered front and red lacquered top and sides. Its features include large, decorative iron lockplates incised with auspicious symbols, warabite handles with pierced backplates, a lockbox that is, interestingly, on the top section rather than the bottom, with three red-lacquered drawers inside. Antique Japanese okidoko (shelf for tokonoma), for Japanese display and storage, made all of keyaki (elm) wood with beautiful grain, 4 sliding doors open to one large compartment, pulls for sliding panels have raised motifs of flowers and waves, Taisho Period (circa 1920).
