19th century boxwood netsuke of two scholar-hermits wearing simple robes and leaf capes and skirts, totally absorbed by the game of GO. Perfectly captured mood of quiet concentration. Very good assured carving, great faces, wonderful detailing of leaf capes, beautiful mellow patina. An antique Japanese Ko Tansu (personal storage chest) and of Kiri (Paulownia), Hinoki (Cypress) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Original hand forged iron hardware including the Mokko handles. A hinged door hides two small drawers behind and two sliding doors hide a storage space where books and reading material was tucked away.

Its original purpose was for the storage of papers, ephemera, letters, documents, books and small accessories...

Cup and saucer with Kutani aka-e (red) decoration of musing philosophers or poets, the back of the saucer with orchids. Late Edo or Meiji, c 1900. Signed Kutani. Diameter or saucer "4 ¾ / 12 cm, height of cup "2¼/ 5,8 cm. Condition: wear to the decoration, esp. to the saucer (cf. pics).

Japanese porcelain Kutani ware stand or brush rest, in the classic Yoshidaya enamel colors of green, yellow, purple and dark blue. Of a squared form, with hollowed interior and pierced melon shape sides. The top surface is detailed with image of a monk riding a tiger through the bamboo forest, leaping over a river. The sides are detailed with blue and yellow enamel ground with geometric patterns. The piece stands on four short feet.

A rare antique Japanese choba biraki tansu (merchant's chest). Made of keyaki (zelkova elm) wood with burled wood on the front. The top portion of the chest has a large full-width drawer. On the right side is vertical row of four small drawers. Two hinged doors open to a shelf and two small interior drawers. And two medium sized drawers line the bottom of the chest. Hand forged iron hardware includes warabite handles, round lock plates and cross bracing on the doors...

19th century netsuke of a baying stag with its head turned back, its upper front teeth bared. Elegant carving with pure clean lines, excellent hairwork, wonderful depiction of volume of the deer body and his antlers, eyes inlaid in black horn, beautiful patina. Himotoshi is formed by its feet. Wonderful sculpture. Height 1 3/4 inches.

Ivory netsuke of a guardian lion, komainu in Japanese or shishi in Chinese, with golden eyes. Resting on its front paws, its head is turned backwards on a four-lobed base.
The komainu is inspired by the Chinese guardian lion shishi, which dates back to the Tang dynasty (581-618)...

19th century netsuke of cut vegetables, tofu and rice cakes inside a wooden pan with handle. Late 19th century Japanese stoneware kogo (box for incense during tea ceremony) in a form of Daikoku holding a rice bale in front of him. Daikoku is one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune, that of rice, and, as a consequence, of wealth. Stoneware with wonderful potting, beautiful celadon glaze, very pleasant patina. Great piece in Japanese taste. Height 2 inches.

This is a very unusual Japanese Cloisonne vase that looks more like a porcelain blue and white vase. The vase has a mix of silver wire and wireless enamel work. The vase is heavy and has a nice glossy sheen. The rims have an unusual dark chocolate patina to them. It stands 9 5/8 inches tall and is 6 1/2 inches wide. Overall condition is very good but there are two short lines in the narrow white area just above the scroll on the base.

Antique Japanese blue and white studio ware porcelain container. Made with 6 sides and a flared base. The sides are decorated with a scene of misty mountains and a small village. Small figures in a boat pole along a river which runs under a bridge and weeping willows...

Rare Japanese four drawer gyosho bako, or peddler's chest, constructed of Sugi (cedar) wood, with iron hardware and mounts, iron rings on the sides for carrying.
